Pine Island, black dirt, and onion crops all were such an integral part of all lives in Orange County and especially Warwick. Pictured here are five hard working and happy Warwick teens L. to R. Joan Kunert, Nancy Langlitz, Kitten Buss (very top), Mary Beyers and Peter Leinweber.
Nancy Langlitz Stanfield sent in this photo and several other Pine Island shots.

She writes that the going rate in those days was 15 cents a crate, and that one could make a good day's wages, $7 or $8, depending on how fast you could pull the onions and fill a crate.

Joan Kunert, Nancy remembers, was very fast, always the best of the group. ... from
