As a young boy, I was thrilled to go with my mom to the A&P. It was always such a warm, lively and happy place, with men and women in an endless banter about about groceries and prices and everyday life. I especially liked the clerks, in their white aprons, scurrying about and deftly picking cereal boxes from the top selves with long poles with gripping tongs on the end, grabbing and then pulling the box until it toppled and then catching it as it fell.
I also remember Christmas season at the A&P store and how nice I thought it was that everyone was always saying Merry Christmas to everybody.
