In the 1950s, girls’ sports were limited. I recall intramural half-court basketball games and enthusiastic gym classes, but most competition was not with other schools. I think the world wised up around the 1970s.
Before that, where you always found the female athletes was on the cheerleading squad. Pictured here are six such athletes at Florida, NY, HS, i.e. S S Seward Institute, hence the large “S" on the uniforms.
