Harold Martin graduated from Goshen High School in 1933 and went on to Hartwick College to receive a BA degree. He continued graduate studies at the U of Michigan, U of Wisconsin and Columbia U. Returning to Goshen from, 1943 to 1948, he taught English and served as vice principal.

Moving on to Harvard in 1948 Mr. Martin continued graduate studies, became Director of General Studies and lectured courses in Comparative Literature. In 1954 he received his Ph.D.

In 1965 Harold Martin was selected to be president of Union College. His tenure was marked by many innovations; most notable was making Union co-ed. After ten years he resigned his position as president.

He then became President of the American Academy in Rome. Subsequently taught at Williams College and later joined the staff at Trinity College. Mr. Martin authored a number of books and numerous published papers.
